Cactus Records & Gifts will be celebrating Record Store Day 2023 as they have every year since the holiday’s inception in 2008, set this year for for Saturday, April 22nd from 10am–7pm. The event will feature live music performances, limited edition vinyl, CD, and even cassette tape releases, free giveaways, a whole lot of “merriment” (whatever that means ;o)) and much more!
While the complete schedule and names of some of the live in-store performances are yet to be announced, confirmed performances include live jazz from the Alex Robilotta Trio featuring Isaac Winemiller & Josh Poole, rock from Hot Milk & the Flower Pallets, blues rock from Gallatin Ghost Train, indie & pop from Steven Stephen, and solo acoustics by Brooke Dunnagan.
This year’s list of Record Store Day releases has been described as one of the best in years, and comes from a wide spectrum of genres and artists – from old to new.
Two of the Americana and country releases will come from this year’s Record Store Day Ambassadors Jason Isbell and his wife Amanda Shires, with some of the other offerings within these genres by Dolly Parton, Son Volt, Sir Douglas Quintet, Orville Peck, Kip Moore, Amythyst Kiah and more.
Early-to-mid 2000s up to current pop and rock will be covered by the likes of (former RSD Ambassador) Taylor Swift, Sigur Ros, Beach House, Black Keys, Joe Strummer, Norah Jones, Dirty Projectors, Jose Gonzales, Arlie, Bastille, The Midnight, Sam Smith & Kim Petras and Maya Hawke, just to name a few.
There will also be plenty of classic rock releases from Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, Joan Jett, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, T Rex, Warren Zevon, Rolling Stones, Sparks and Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen… the list goes on and on.
‘80s and ‘90s pop and rock will be represented by artists like Tori Amos, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Björk, Duran Duran, U2, Billy Joel, Elton John, The Pixies, Tom Tom Club, David Byrne, The Cranberries and The Violent Femmes.
Hip-hop and rap releases range from Nas, Old Dirty Bastard, RZA, E-40, The Game, Slum Village, J Dilla, to MF Doom, Ultramagnetic MCs, PM Dawn, Kae Tempest and more.
Some of the jazz and blues recordings come from Chet Baker, Art Blakey, Willie Dixon, Max Roach, Sonny Stitt, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Miles Davis, B.B. King, Medeski Martin & Wood, Charlie Parker, Sun Ra, Koko Taylor and Muddy Waters.
There are several headbangers and pit moshers, including releases by Dio, Hüsker Dü, Death, Mötley Crüe, The Ramones, The Sword, Mars Volta, Heroin, In This Moment, Dope, Kittie, Shadows Fall and Sunn/Boris, among others.
And to top things off, there are the funk & soul, reggae and world releases, soundtracks and various artist compilations, and titles (including some of those above and many others not) that simply defy categorization and are too many to address. There are hundreds of releases in all, and you can see the complete list at www.recordstoreday.com. Due to the limited nature of releases, and efforts to get customers as many items on their lists as possible, Cactus only allows 1 copy per customer.
Cactus Records & Gifts will open their doors at 9am on Record Store Day. They are located at 2742 W Main St. Learn more about Bozeman’s favorite “Weirdo Store” at www.cactusrecords.net. •
