Bozeman High School track team goes out on top by Danny Waldo
The members of the Bozeman High School track teams had watched several of their peers put together championship runs during the 2018-2019 school year, and they didn’t want to be left out. Thanks to a dominating performance by Delaney Hahn, the Bozeman Hawks girls’ track team added to Bozeman’s trophy haul, capturing the state title in dominating fashion to bring a close to the 2018-19 high school athletic competition season.
The Lady Hawks outpaced the competition, closing the State AA track and field meet with 112 points to run away from runner-up Billings West (86 points) and third-place finisher Missoula Sentinel (76 points).
The story of the Class AA meet was senior Delaney Hahn who placed in five competitions, including winning three individual titles. Bahn got things started on Friday when she set a new all-class record in the long jump with a launch of 19 feet, 3.75 inches to claim her first title. She followed that up with first place finishes in the 100-meter (12.38 seconds), and 200-meter dashes (24.72 seconds) before placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and adding a third place finish in the high jump.
Hahn wasn’t the only Lady Hawk to earn multiple medals. Junior Terra Trom took home an individual title in the 1,600-meter run before adding a runner-up finish in the 800-meter, and running the anchor leg on Bozeman’s championship-winning 1,600-meter relay team.
“It’s been amazing. I think everyone had amazing progression throughout the season. We knew some people could compete, like Delaney of course, at a really high level, and it was amazing watching her (this weekend), but we’ve seen every girl and boy on the team run, jump and throw the best they could all season,” Trom said. “Everyone progressed really nicely all season thanks to the coaches, so I think that’s the main reason we did well.”
On the boys’ side Bozeman just missed out on taking home a trophy after the Hawks finished in fourth place with 56 points. Missoula Sentinel took home their first team title (109 points) since the 1960s, while Billings West followed in second (86 points), and Kalispell-Flathead claimed third (70 points).
Jameson Slevin earned Bozeman’s lone individual title on the boys’ side, taking home the title in the pole vault after clearing a height of 14 feet, 6 inches. Eleven other individuals earned Top 6 finishes, in addition to the 1,600-meter relay team claiming a fifth place finish. •
