Livingston’s Blue Slipper Theatre presents the next production of its current season with Seamus Heaney’s The Burial of Thebes, adapted from the ancient Greek tragedy by Sophocles. Performances are set for October 2nd–11th. Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:30pm, with Sunday matinees to follow at 3pm. The local production is directed by Marc Beaudin featuring a local cast.
“Whoever is not for us is against us.” The sequel to the tragic tale of Oedipus, Antigone dramatizes the elemental question between private loyalties and a citizen’s responsibility to the state as depicted by the conflict between Antigone, Oedipus’ daughter, and Creon, the King of Thebes.

Creon has forbidden a proper burial to Oedipus’s son Polynices, whom he has decreed a traitor. Antigone openly disobeys Creon’s command in order to honor the traditions of her ancestors by burying her brother. Ignoring the opinion of his confidants, Creon persists in his harsh punishment of Antigone until it is too late to avert personal and state tragedy.
Tickets for The Burial of Thebes are $20 or $15 for students/seniors (plus fees) and are available at www.blueslipper.org. Seating at the Blue Slipper, located at 113 E Callender St, is limited. Please call (406) 222-7720 for more information. •
