‘Tis the season for warm movie nights in! Bozeman Film Society allows filmgoers an opportunity to enjoy independent cinema on the big screen. A pair of upcoming Ellen events have been announced as part of the current season.
On Wednesday, October 5th, spanish language dramedy Official Competition screens. Directed by Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn.
In search of significance and social prestige, a billionaire businessman decides to make a film to leave his mark. To do so, he hires the best: a stellar team formed by famous filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz) and two renowned actors, both enormously talented, but with even bigger egos: the Hollywood actor Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and radical theater thespian Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez). Both legends, but not exactly the best of friends. Through a series of increasingly eccentric challenges set by Lola, Felix and Iván must face not only each other, but also their own legacies.
“The pretentiousness of acting is a fun thing to lampoon, and Official Competition does it with surgical precision,” wrote Michael O’Sullivan of The Washington Post. Not rated with a runtime of 114 minutes.

Following Wednesday, Oct. 19th is the locally filmed God’s Country starring Thandewi Newton. Directed by Julian Higgins, locations in Livingston and Bozeman serve as the backdrop for the film.
A black former police officer turned professor in a rural college town is drawn into an escalating battle of wills that puts her most deeply held values to the test in this gripping modern day Western.
A reviewer for The Film Experience wrote, “A slow-burn thriller about isolation and fighting back against a cold, unforgiving world, God’s Country grips you the minute it starts and never lets go until the credits roll.” Not rated with a runtime of 104 minutes.
Official Competition and God’s Country screen at 7pm at the Ellen Theatre. Reserved tickets are $9.25–$9.75 (plus fees) and available at www.theellentheatre.org, by calling (406) 585-5885, or by visiting the Ellen box office. Wine, beer and concessions will be available in the lobby prior to the screening. CC devices available.
