BFS presents two critical highlights as award season approaches
Public film screenings are back in full swing with Bozeman Film Society. Upcoming Ellen events have been announced as part of the 2021-22 Season, and virtual films are still available to screen for cinephiles at home.
Next up, BFS screens C’mon C’mon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Woody Norman. The event is set for 7pm on Wednesday, January 12th at the Ellen Theatre.
Johnny (Phoenix) and his young nephew (the astonishing Norman) forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply moving story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future. From writer-director Mike Mills (20th Century Women, Beginners), the film is Rated R and runs 108 minutes.
“No Joker in sight as the stellar and always surprising Joaquin Phoenix shows his tender side in this bracing, bittersweet family dramedy from Mike Mills, whose movie is a quiet thing, but with a delicate, soulful magic you won’t soon forget.” – Peter Travers, ABC News
Cannes standout Drive My Car follows on Saturday, January 22nd at 7pm.
Two years after his wife’s unexpected death, Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), a taciturn young woman assigned by the festival to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900. As the production’s premiere approaches, tensions mount amongst the cast and crew, not least between Yusuke and Koji Takatsuki, a handsome TV star who shares an unwelcome connection to Yusuke’s late wife. Forced to confront painful truths raised from his past, Yusuke begins – with the help of his driver – to face the haunting mysteries his wife left behind. Adapted from Haruki Murakami’s short story. Directed by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, the film runs 179 minutes.
“A masterpiece about life and death and art… a work of pure cinema.” –Manohla Dargis, New York Times Critic’s Pick
