Bozeman Symphony invites audiences on a captivating musical journey with Pictures at an Exhibition, Maurice Ravel’s dazzling orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky’s timeless masterpiece, paired with Kevin Puts’ Marimba Concerto. Performances will be held April 26th and 27th. Saturday show begins at 7:30pm, followed by a closing matinee on Sunday at 2:30pm. Both will be held at the Willson Auditorium in Downtown Bozeman. Pre-concert talks are scheduled to begin one hour prior to each performance.
Originally composed in 1874 as a piano suite, Pictures at an Exhibition brings to life the striking artworks of Russian architect and painter Viktor Hartmann. Through ten vividly distinct movements, Mussorgsky paints musical portraits of scenes ranging from playful baby chicks and a menacing fairytale witch to the solemnity of catacombs and the grandeur of the Great Gate of Kiev. The piece is most famously known in its orchestral form, arranged by Ravel in 1922, which highlights its dramatic color and sweeping intensity.
Adding to the program, the Symphony’s former Principal Percussionist, Dana Dominguez, takes center stage as the featured soloist in Grammy Award-winning composer Puts’ Marimba Concerto. Showcasing both the lyrical and rhythmic capabilities of the marimba, this concerto highlights Dominguez’s technical mastery and expressive musicianship. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Dominguez is now a member of the United States Navy Band’s prestigious Concert and Ceremonial Band, performing at official government and military events, including ceremonies at the White House, Pentagon, and Arlington National Cemetery. She was a member of the Bozeman Symphony from 2020 to 2024.
Rounding out the program is Nina Shekhar’s Lumina, a mesmerizing work that traces a journey from darkness into light with delicate textures and luminous harmonies.
