The Montana State University Department of Music annually enrolls approximately 100 music majors and an additional 2,000 non-majors in a variety of academic, performance, and pedagogical activities. While its primary role is to develop and maintain programs which prepare students for careers in music teaching, the Department of Music provides a musical environment in which students pursue the musical arts. Instruction in music is provided by a faculty comprised of outstanding musician/teachers.The Department of Music is an asset to the cultural and intellectual life of Montana State University and the community of Bozeman. More than 100 recitals and concerts are presented annually by students, faculty, ensembles, and guest artists. Many performing ensembles, ranging from the Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Chorale, to the Studio Jazz Lab and the “Spirit of the West” Marching Band, provide opportunities for all university students to actively continue their musical endeavors. Many of these ensembles have represented the Department of Music at national conferences and through international tours.
