AT THE BLOOD DRIVE OR DONATION CENTER\nYou share the gift of life through blood donation.\nYour donation is assigned a unique computer\nbarcode number\, which will identify it throughout\nits path to a hospital patient.\nAT THE RED CROSS LABORATORY\nSamples of blood components are sent for\ntesting to an American Red Cross National\nTesting Laboratory to ensure they’re safe for\npatients. The blood is separated into three\ncomponents: red cells\, platelets and plasma and\nplaced in quarantined\, temperature-controlled\nrefrigeration units until the test results are\nreceived (usually 12-16 hours later). After the\nblood components are released from testing\,\nthey are transported to the hospitals as needed.\n3. AT THE HOSPITAL\nDoctors determine when a patient needs a\ntransfusion and which component they need.\nThe blood component is then transfused to a\npatient by hospital personnel.

This is mainly due to habitat loss – grasslands are being\ncontinually\, and permanently\, converted to cropland. Another major reason\nis the incredibly rapid and comprehensive loss of the region’s keystone\nspecies; bison\, prairie-dogs and beavers. During western expansion\, these\nspecies were eradicated so fast\, and so completely\, that as a (Western)\nsociety we never fully understood their role in this ecosystem.\nConsequently\, in the present day\, we don’t understand their value in\nrestoring this ecosystem. These lost ecological connections are sometimes\nintuitive\, sometimes surprising\, and will be the subject of this talk. \nAbout Andy Boyce-Pero\, Ph.D. \nAndy is a Research Ecologist with Smithsonian’s Great Plains Science\nprogram. He is one of the founding members of the team and has been a part\nof the project since 2018. His work focuses on one overarching theme;\nunderstanding how to most effectively conserve imperiled grassland birds\nand their habitats. Sometimes this takes the form of cutting-edge tracking\nstudies\, old school point counts and nest searching\, or even piloting\nremote-controlled badgers to understand how birds respond to potential\npredators. In addition to his research\, he is also a faculty affiliate at\nthe University of Montana. Andy received his bachelor degree in Ecology and\nEvolution from the University of Colorado\, and his PhD in Wildlife Biology\nfrom the University of Montana. \nPresented by Gallatin Valley Earth Day\, Gallatin Wildlife Association and\nthe Smithsonian
