Panel: Expanding the Arc of the Suffrage Story
September 17 @ 6:00pm
Virtual Panel Discussion: Expanding the Arc of the Suffrage Story
Four distinguished panelists – Forward Montana Executive Director, Kiersten Iwai, Montana Women Vote Community Organizer, Ekoo Beck, and MSU Professors Tomomi Yamaguchi and Franke Wilmer – will offer unique perspectives on women’s voting rights from a variety of fields, experiences, and activism.
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which states “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” This Amendment marked a major victory for white women, who secured the right to make their voices heard at the ballot box. However, many indigenous women and women of color were excluded from both the process and the outcomes of the early 20th century fights for women’s suffrage. This anniversary provides an opportunity to include these voices and their stories of suffrage, or lack thereof, and to highlight the continued threats to women’s rights today as we think about the future of voting rights in the United States.
This event is sponsored by The Extreme History Project, The Montana Racial Equity Project, Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman Business and Professional Women, League of Women Voters of the Bozeman Area, Montana National Organization for Women, the MSU President’s Commission on the Status of University Women, MSU Women’s Center, Friends of the MSU Library, and KGVM – Gallatin Valley Community Radio.
