“en Plein Air” reception
July 26, 2019 @ 5:30pm
The Elling House Arts and Humanities Center is sponsoring “en plein air” reception for four Montana Artists on Friday July 26, 2019. The artists exhibiting are Ray Campeau, Cindy Owings, Dale Tuckee, and Joyce Pearson. Their paintings were drafted during a session in May at which Campeau provided a basic demonstration before all artists went into the chill and wet of a Virginia City May afternoon to paint what they could find and see.
According to artistsnetwork.com, plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.”
The Elling House Arts and Humanities Center was established in 2008 to continue the tradition of the original owners of the Elling House, Mary Elling. Elling sought to provide educational, artistic, and entertainment programs to local audiences.
