A RIVER BELOW
Thursday, January 4th, 7pm
The Emerson Cultural Center
On Thursday, January 4th, at 7pm at the Emerson Center, The Bozeman Doc Series presents the Montana premiere of the award-winning new documentary, A River Below.
A documentary as dramatic, ambiguous, and multilayered as any fiction film, A River Below captures the Amazon in all its complexity as it examines the actions of environmental activists using the media in an age where truth is a relative term. The film follows a reality TV star and a renowned marine biologist as they each attempt to save the Amazon pink river dolphin from being hunted to extinction.
With gorgeous, sweeping aerial views we gain perspective from above, but as the film plunges deep into the murky, tangled rivers, we uncover a scandal that has no simple solution. A River Below is a completely unexpected film – a knotty poem of duality and dissonance and a journey into ourselves as we attempt to better this world.
Since the film’s world premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, A River Below has screened at festivals around the world, receiving widespread critical acclaim.
“The truth turns into a tangled mess in “A River Below,” a bold and urgent documentary whose seemingly straightforward story quickly runs awry.” New York Times
“Díaz’s sublime cinematography and the way [director] Grieco teases out the knotty narrative make for a haunting exploration of an ethical morass, where vilification is easy, but deconstructing power much more difficult.” Village Voice
“…a haunting documentary that asks urgent questions in this age of extinction crisis.” The Hollywood Reporter
“Gripping and unforgettable.” The Playlist
