The Robert and Gennie DeWeese Gallery is excited to bring you prints by Joseph Hecht to kick off our 2017-2018 Gallery Season.
Joseph Hecht, painter and printmaker, was born on December 14, 1891, in Lodz, Poland. He studied at the Academie Beaux-Arts in Krakow between 1909 and 1914. Hecht traveled throughout Europe until the beginning of WWI when he went to Norway where he would remain to render studies of the landscape in drypoint and engraving. Hecht was an instrumental character in the printmaking scene in Paris in the 1920s where his work and friendship with Stanley William Hayter gave birth to Atelier 17, one of the most noted printmaking workshops of the early 1900s. Hayter said of Hecht, “He Possessed an extreme sensitivity to all the qualities of a line – rigidity, flexibility, resilience – and saw the character of life in the line itself, not the description of life by means of the line.”
This show is a unique and exciting group of imagery and represents an uncommon chance to see a body of work of this scale from Joseph Hecht. This exhibition was made possible through the generosity of the Nelson-Dunks collection which lent the body of work for display in our space.
This exhibition will be open until the end of September. Individual students, faculty and community members are always welcome to enjoy the show at any time during normal gallery hours. The Robert and Gennie DeWeese gallery is free and open to the public. Visitors can park in visitor parking located on 11th Avenue in the northeast corner of the faculty parking lot. The gallery is located within Bozeman High School at 205 N. 11th Ave and is open from 9 am to 3pm Monday through Friday.
We are working hard to staff the gallery during all hours of the day, but as it is the beginning of the semester some unstaffed time remains. Any of the art faculty or front office staff can let you in to the gallery if it is not open and you would like to view the show. No students may be in the gallery without gallery guard or faculty supervision.
